Welcome to my Home Page.

I am now retired from the University. I was appointed Professor Emeritus in November 2012. Formerly I was Deputy Director of the Centre for Educational Research in the  Department of Education, in the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences at London South Bank University. I was Course Director of our EdD (Professional Doctorate in Education) which has a special focus on Equality, Diversity and Sustainability. Click  here or contact me for further information. I was Professor of Mathematics Education (part-time) at Loughborough University in the Mathematics Education Centre until August 2015.

I am Visiting Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Visiting Professor at Loughborough University.

I received the Svend Pederson Award from Stockholm University and delivered the Award lecture on 26th January 2010. Information about it can be found here.

I began teaching mathematics at secondary schools in 1966 and spent many years thereafter teaching in London and in Israel. I began doctoral research in 1982, joined the Institute of Education in London in 1984 as lecturer, and moved to London South Bank University in 1987.

Recent research projects include:

  • Enhancing mathematical learning for Indigenous students in remote communities: A design research approach. The project was headed by Professor Robyn Jorgensen (Griffith University) and Professor Peter Sullivan (Monash University). Professor Jo Boaler (Stanford University) and I awee co-investigators. The project received major grant funding from the Australian Research Council, and also from the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia (AISWA)
  • An EU funded project under Comenius entitled Awareness of big ideas in mathematics classrooms commenced in October 2009 and was a two year project. This project was in collaboration with Prof Sebastian Kuntze at Ludwigsburg University, Dr Hans-Stefan Siller at Salzburg University and Bernard Murphy at MEI.
  • An EU funded project entitled HANDS (Helping Autism-diagnosed teenagers Navigate and Develop Socially). Partners included Aarlborg University, Denmark, and the Institute for the Psychology of Special Education, Budapest, Hungary, from 2009 to 2012.
