The beginning of the “contrapàs”

The “contrapàs” is a traditional dance of Prats de Lluçanès.

It appeared about XVII and XVIII centuries when the carriers and saddles guilts got together, they began to be named “elois”. Until XIXth century they got together in Prats de Lluçanès and they have danced the “contrapàs” up to our days, on 25th of June.

The evolution of the “Contrapàs”

It’s a local tradition of the town; the dance is included in a summer festival, which is on 24th and 25th of June. All the people who want to dance, dance it, so it’s very nice to see.

The dancers wear blue jeans, a black T-shirt, rope-solers, a beret and a stick, when the people dance they put the stick on the back; but the other people who are not dancers, dance "contrapàs" with the same t-shirt, that is diferent every year.

We dance the “contrapàs” with the rhythm of the music.

In “contrapàs” we can find two different parts, but in the two parts the people dance it in the "Plaça Nova" and in the "Plaça Vella".

The first one is the “traginer’s” caper, it is the old part, and we dance it with groups of four; with a diferent music than the second one.The second one is the “town’s” caper, and it is the new part. All the town begins to dance at the same time, making a circle.
