Jay Meyer

Coach Jay Meyer enters his 23rd season of coaching high school baseball.  2018 will be his seventeenth year as a varsity coach.  Meyer has been coaching at Lee's Summit West since its opening in 2005.  Before assuming the head coaching position from Kim Rohlfing, Meyer compiled back to back 20 win seasons with the Junior Varsity squad.   The Varsity squad finished the 2017 season with a record of 14-14, losing to the eventual 4th place State qualifier, Lee's Summit High School.

As a player, Meyer was a stand out for Truman High School both on the mound and at the plate.  While at Truman, Jay was a recipient of All-Conference and All-Area honors.  During his senior year with the Patriots, Meyer received MVP honors as they reached the state quarter finals.

Jay attended Johnson County Community College following his high school career.  While at JCCC, he led the Cavs to the Central Districts.  The Cavaliers lost in extra innings to Seminole, Oklahoma falling just shy of a Junior College World Series appearance.  Meyer added several honors while pitching for JCCC including Eastern Jayhawk Conference and All Region VI selections.  He was also the starter for t he Kansas Junior College All-Star game that same year.  In the spring of 1990, Meyer was drafted by the Chicago Cubs.  After being drafted, he was invited to join the Junior College USA team traveling to Cuba in the summer of 1991.  With the impressive career at the Junior College level, Jay committed to play at the University of Oklahoma under Coach Larry Cochell.  Taking the opportunity at hand, Meyer chose to waive the transfer and signed with the Cubs.  Over the next five years, Meyer pitched professionally for the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, and Houston Astros organizations.

After his professional career, Meyer returned to his hometown to become head coach at Truman High School for five years.  During this time, he coached his teams to a Big Eight conference title, 2 district titles, a sectional title, and a quarter final appearance in state competition.  During the five years, hi teams managed a top 10 state ranking three of the five years and notch two of only three 20 plus win seasons in Truman program history.

In the off-season, Meyer served as a traveling tournament coach during the summer seasons.  During these campaigns, Jay helped develop and capture the 1999 and 2001 AAU 18-U National Championships with the KC Monarchs team out of the Kansas City area.  Contributing to the growth of his hometown, Meyer worked with young ball players as a personal hitting, fielding, and pitching instructor in the Independence area.

Coach Meyer has also served as an associate scout for the Texas Rangers under cross-checker and close friend, Mike Grouse, for the past six years.

Jay and his wife, Brooke, have two beautiful daughters Savannah and Taylor, and currently reside in Kansas City, MO.
