The Why & How
School vacation can be a hungry time for children who receive free/reduced lunches during the school year.  The Lebanon Community of Shalom is addressing this need during summer and other school vacation times. A variety of church and community organizations have volunteered
to supply the food and labor to supply sack lunches for hungry children in Boone County.  We have a new location for distribution
in Lebanon at Shalom House.
There are about 2,500 school aged children eligible for free and reduced lunch in Boone County.  When this program began in the summer of 2007 we fed 49 children the first week.  As the word spread and food costs increased, our numbers have climbed steadily.  Our hungriest week occurred July of 2011 when 527 children were served.
The combination of rising food costs and rising unemployment indicates that our numbers will only continue to increase as more families feel the economic pinch and more families learn about this program.
We anticipate distribution of a minimum
of 500 lunch bags each week this summer.

Lebanon Community of Shalom has received grant
monies to subsidize the lunches.  We try to use as
much fresh, healthy food as we can and items such
as 100% fruit juice and fresh fruits are expensive.
Many of the smaller groups and churches could not
afford to pay for the supplies to make 2,500+ lunches (500 children x 5 days) without a Shalom subsidy.
It is with the continuing support of local civic
organizations and Churches of Boone County,
The Community Foundation of Boone County, Lebanon City Beverage Tax Fund and Boone County REMC.

your group pack, distribute and/or purchase the lunches please contact
