Want, want to

Verb:

  • iste = want, ask for

 

To want something:

  • No article : Su istiyorum = i want water
  • Indefinite article “a” : Bir su istiyorum = i want a water (i want a bottle, glass, or another known unit of, water)
  • Definite article “the": Suyu istiyorum = i want the water

To want to do something:

  • İstanbul'a gitmek istiyorum (git-mek) = I want to go to Istanbul (indefinite article used, implying that i want it in general)
  • İstanbul'a gitmeyi istiyorum (gitme-y-i) = I want to go to Istanbul (definite article used, implying that we are specifically talking about it)

 

Note:

  • In Turkish, “istemek” does not have an as strong and confrontational meaning as “want” in English. It can be, and is often, used to mean “would like to".
