Binaural Beats & Alpha Learning


Binaural beats or Binaural tones are auditory processing artifacts, or apparent sounds, the perception of which arises in the brain for specific physical stimuli.

This effect was discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, and earned greater public awareness in the late 20th century.

It is claimed that Binaural beats could help induce relaxation, creativity and other desirable mental states.

when two tones at slightly different frequencies are presented separately, one to each of a subject's ears, using stereo headphones. A beating tone with the deference of the frequencies will be perceived.

That is, if tone with 500 hz to one ear and with 480 hz frequency to the other is administered, we perceive (hear) a sound with 20 hz frequency.

The frequency of the tones must be below about 1,000 to 1,500 hertz for the beating to be heard. The difference between the two frequencies must be small (below about 30 Hz) for the effect to occur.

Of these Alpha state is thought to be conducive to learning as this state is devoid of distraction and is a contemplative state.

This is the state of trance in, hypnotists parlance and is the ‘Dyana sthithi’ (deep meditative state) monks of all religions endeavor to achieve.

As it is the state of heightened suggestibility, in their work hypnotists induce it in the subjects, through suggestion and other means.

In Lozanov’s Sugestopedia suggestions and relaxation music are used to take students to the alpha state of consciousness.

In using Binaural beats. A music starting with beta (waking state) frequency and gradually reduced to alpha state is administered to attain the state and the procedure is known as ‘Brain Entrainment’. There have been a number of claims regarding Binaural beats, among them that Binaural beats may help people improve their memory and learning ability.

Scientific research in Binaural beats is limited. No conclusive studies have been released to support the wilder claims made.
