What are the Gathering and Community Classes?
A weekly gathering and classes held on Wednesdays from 10 am - 3 pm. Eight to ten week sessions are offered twice each year, Fall and Spring. Each session includes 7-9 classes and one showcase/makeup day. LEARN offers classes on a wide variety of topics and interests. Some are professionally led, some are lay led, some are cooperatively led. Past offerings have included art, dance, music, creative writing, science, history, individual and group sports, and finance. Parents are encouraged to offer classes in their area of interest. The class fee is determined by the convener but generally fees run from $20-$50/10 week session per class. Class fees are posted when the schedule of offerings is completed.
Participation in classes is not mandatory to take part in this activity. This is a great time to come and socialize with fellow homeschoolers and take a break while the kids play. There is a large field and a playground, as well as a gym.
Membership in LEARN is not required for this activity. A nominal fee is added to non-members. This fee can be waived if it is a hardship for your family. This is an all ages gathering for homeschool enrichment and socializing so the whole family is welcome to come and participate.
A few reminders:
Bring any food your family will need during your stay.
Due to severe allergies please do not bring any peanut products.
No play weapons are allowed at the gathering or classes.
This is not a drop off event.
We are always planning for the next session of LEARN classes.
If you have an interest, hobby, art or profession you would like to share with the community this is your chance! Ideas for classes include but are definitely not limited to art, crafts, drama, science, writing, dance, book clubs, music, history, sports, woodworking, electronics, foreign languages, exercise, etc.
You do not have to be a professional to facilitate or coordinate a class! Your child interested in discussing philosophy? Facilitate a round table. Have a great curriculum sitting on a bookshelf that would be more fun with a group? Open up a co-op. We also welcome classes that are shorter than 9 weeks. How about a design your own costume class that runs through Halloween? Or a unit on indigenous peoples for November? Or maybe you just love that one book and want to do every Five in a Row activity over the course of 5 weeks. Use your imagination!
We strongly encourage the offering of community (non-profit) and co-op (multi-parent led) classes in order to keep costs down for our families. These classes will be given priority when making decision regarding space/time constraints.
It would be great to hold all class proposals submitted. But there are a limited number of slots available this year based on what a community our size can support. Submitting a class proposal does not necessarily guarantee we will have a space available for your class. We will do our best to include as many as possible.
