Your Input on Blight is Needed

posted Feb 12, 2014, 10:11 AM by LEAPDetroit .

Addressing the concerns of blight on the Lower East side is a specific focus of LEAP. In order to inform and guide the process of developing a successful Blight Elimination campaign, we are consistently encouraged to seek out feedback from the community.  We strive to educate ourselves on how to design a targeted strategy and campaign that tackles "real world" conditions and priorities. We urge you to complete the attached survey, which is meant to uplift the community's concerns as they relate to blight removal and elimination.  Completed surveys can be dropped off at the Warren Conner Development Coalition offices at 4401 Conner Detroit, MI 48215 between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or you can email them to us leapdetroit@gmail.com. Should you have any questions about how your responses will be used feel free to give Tracy a call at 313-571-2800 ext. 3202. Responses will remain completely ANONYMOUS.

Stakeholder Advisory Group Update

posted Jan 29, 2013, 9:23 AM by LEAPDetroit .

Thank you to everyone who attended the last LEAP Stakeholder Advisory Group Meeting on January 15, 2013.

The meeting focused on setting priorities for LEAP's policy recommendations and implementation projects. Below are the top 3 priorities in each category as voted on by SAG:

Policy Recommendations:
  1. Land Acquisition Reform - Available land should first be offered to adjacent property owners then to community groups or land banks before widespread sale to speculators and private interests that have not demonstrated a commitment to the communities where land is purchased.
  2. Nuisance Abatement Program - Hold negligent property owners responsible for the blight they create in neighborhoods when they do not maintain or develop their property through harsher penalties, like class action lawsuits, or property forfeiture after prolonged neglect.
  3. Neighborhood Benefits District - Enact an ordinance that would allow communities to establish a special assessment district to provide crime prevention, mosquito abatement, and snow removal services through an annual household assessment.
Implementation Projects:
  1. Jefferson- Chalmers Neighborhood Stabilization Initiative - Stabilize an active residential neighborhood through home repair, vacant housing rehabilitation, and marketing to welcome new residents.

  2. Geothermal Energy - Reduce dependence on traditional forms of energy through expanded use of geothermal energy.

  3. Villages Neighborhood Stabilization Initiative - Stabilize an active residential neighborhood through home repair, vacant housing rehabilitation, and marketing to welcome new residents.

Materials from the meeting are attached.
