Rankings in Action: FitCity Challenge, Smith County, TX

Run through a fast-food restaurant for a double-meat cheeseburger with mayo and bacon. "Super-sizeFitCity Tyler logo

it, please!" No exercise. Too busy. Sound familiar? The obesity problem is an American problem that affects all of us in every community where we work, learn, live and play. Obesity and inactivity have been largely a losing battle so far, with steadily increasing rates in most areas. Though daunting, this is something we can tackle, even in communities with the greatest challenge.

A community-wide campaign to promote more fit lifestyles is underway in Tyler and the rest of East Texas, the Fit City Challenge, which the Tyler Morning Telegraph is spearheading with the help of community leaders.

"The idea of the Fit City Challenge is simple," said Dave Berry, editor of the Tyler Morning Telegraph. "Through our reporting, we want to educate the community, providing information that highlights programs, tips and tools with which to fight."

On September 13, 2011 we will be hosting a Rankings in Action webinar, focusing on the FitCity Challenge, featuring Dave Berry, editor of the Tyler Morning Telegraph and George Roberts CEO of the Northeast Texas Public Health District. This webinar will discus the role of media in advancing a community health initiative. Please click here to sign up.
