Week 2

Homeworks are due on Sunday 09-15-2013 by 11:59 pm.

Homework:

1- Please read/listen/study the sections 2.0 of LabSim and then take the corresponding tests.

Optional :

1- Take the online test below: csit834-hw-ch02.htm
Create another bootable USB Flash using one of the following methods: From Linux (.img and dd command) or from Windows (.iso and unetbootin.exe ) as shown below.
1- From Linux
If you already have a desktop or laptop Linux system:
The easiest way to make a USB Flash for Debian:
you need a Linux system, web browser and Internet connection, get the .img file from:
live.debian.net (main web page and find the iso archive. As of now it's the following link but it seems to change over time).

pick:
debian-live-7.1.0-i386-gnome-desktop.img (download it)

insert your USB Flash (minimum 4GB), do the following as 'root' user.
find the device name:
mount
fdisk -l
make sure device is unmounted. If it is mounted, issue: umount /dev/sdX (X: a, b, c, etc., whatever is in your case).
as root using gparted and create one partition on your USB flash (remember how we did it in class?).
then issue the following command as root
dd if=debian-live-7.1.0-i386-gnome-desktop.img of=/dev/sda

this will copy a binary bootable and executable image to the USB Flash.
When copying is done, reboot the system with the Flash (make sure your boot order is USB or USB HDD first)

2- From Windows
If you have a Windows system: READ these instructions FIRST, understand and then do them.

Download gnome (or kde for yourself) .iso i.e. debian-live-7.1.0-i386-gnome-desktop.iso file from:
live.debian.net (main web page and find the iso archive. As of now it's the following link but it seems to change over time).

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/release/current-live/i386/iso-cd/ into C:\misc\ OR any directory of your choice (usually it goes to Downloads subdirectory)

Download unetbootin.exe from the Internet into C:\misc\ OR any directory of your choice (usually it goes to Downloads subdirectory)

Insert a 4 or more GB USB Flash - format as FAT32. You need to know what the designation of the USB Flash is (that is which drive it is, E:\, F:\, etc., assume it's E:\).

Execute unetbootin.exe, select iso and navigate to the .iso file, press Finish.

Reboot the Windows to boot from USB Flash - make sure the boot order is USB.
If all went well, system should boot in Debian.

Optional - BackTrack:

Optional - Debian:
For more information please read the manual from Debian at:
http://live.debian.net/ Especially section 2.3 and
and browse around

Optional:

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianLive/Howto/ISO

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/release/current-live/i386/usb-hdd/

This directory has several .img files each for a specific desktop (gnome, kde, lxde and xfce), lxde is very light weight (takes little space on the drive).

Optioanl - Ubuntu:
install it at home or bring it with you and install it in the class (come early for this if you can, 6:00pm)
