Welcome!

Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC)
Breakfast is served in class every morning. At 8:15 a team of parent volunteers visit each classroom to collect any uneaten food. The food is then brought to the cafeteria and saved for students to eat during their recess period. If you are able to volunteer in the morning to help collect food, please call our office at (818) 892 8618.

Valentine’s Day Dance

Oz
Are you ready to see another musical at Lassen? In May we’d like to present a revised version of the Wizard of Oz! Students in grades 3rd – 5th are encouraged to audition for a part. Hopefully some of our PreK/TK students will perform as our little Munchkins. We need parent volunteers for this production. Parents are needed to help build sets, develop costumes, and supervise practice sessions. Please call the main office if you can help. Auditions will begin next week. Robotics Class Beginning on Saturday, February 21st,we will begin a Robotics class for students in 3rd – 5th grades. Students will develop, build and program a robot using the Scratch program and Rasberry Pi. Participants must commit to attending two Saturdays and two hours every Tuesday through May. Refer to the flyer that was sent home for more information and to register. A parent technology class has been scheduled 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. on 2/21 & 2/28. Learn online applications to help your student with reading and math concepts. All parents are welcome!

Perfect Attendance Assemblies
On Monday, February 9th, students who earned perfect attendance in January will be recognized at an awards assembly.  Each student will receive a special January brag tag.  See your child’s teacher for more information.

Gifted Parent Meeting – Feb. 27th, 8:15
Plan to attend this informative meeting that will review Kaplan’s icons of depth and complexity which we integrate in our gifted classrooms. The Depth and Complexity Icons are visual prompts designed to help students go beyond surface level understanding of a concept and enhance their ability to think critically.  Parents will tour classrooms after a quick meeting.

Physical Education
Students in 1st – 5th grades receive 200 minutes of PE instruction every two
weeks.  The implementation schedule
for each class is posted in the main office.  Speak with your child’s teacher to find out which skills are being taught each month.  Each grade level follows state developed grade level standards.

PreK & Kinder Enrollment
On February 28th, 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.,we will begin accepting kindergarten enrollment applications for the 2015-16 school year.  Please remember that the new law states that kindergarten students must be five years of age by September 1st.

Class Birthday Parties
Class parties will be held at the end of the day at 2:20. We ask that treats be
as healthy as possible.  If cupcakes are brought in please limit the treat to the mini cakes version. While we look forward to recognizing every child’s birthday, we need to be mindful of the amount of instructional time that is spent celebrating birthdays.  Please speak to your child’s teacher for more information.

Healthy Eating
In 2010 Healthy Hunger for Kids Act was developed with the goal of eliminating childhood obesity. To support this initiative, LAUSD has made changes in the breakfast and lunch program to include healthier food items such as whole grain products and fresh fruits and vegetables. Another change was the discontinuation of selling/providing soft drinks on school campuses. In support of this Act Lassen will begin selling healthy snack foods after school - e.g. apples, pickles, corn, popcorn, fruit snacks and juice. Teachers are working to provide non-food reward for students. Please do not send your child to school with candy or hot chips (e.g. Takis or Flamin’ Hot Cheetos). We could use support in selling our healthy snacks after school. Please contact the main office if you can volunteer. Money earned will help fund rewards for students; support our upcoming musical and other school programs.
