My project will provide educational and recreational opportunities for the kids in Los Tocones, The Dominican Republic, by providing them with used baseball equipment, and basic computer knowledge by supplying them with laptop computers designed and built for students in developing countries.
I will work with Shari OstrowScher and Howard Scher, who started their project when they visited the Dominican Republic with Chris Doherty, and they created the school library and stocked the shelves with over 700 donated Spanish-language books. After they talked to my Sunday School class about their project, I was inspired to join their cause. They asked me to help them with a collection of used baseball equipment and I graciously accepted. But I wasn't satisfied. I chose to help obtain used baseball equipment and I took on their additional idea of providing the students with laptop computers. I will provide as many laptop computers as One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), the organization with the laptops, will provide at no cost. For the major part of my project, I will write a quick-start guide with the help of Troop 1066 based on the different activities on XO laptop in both English and Spanish. As of July 12th, this has been complete, though mywork with the town will continue for years to come.
The bulk of this project has been completed and the guides went into initial testing, and the second update of the manual has been uploaded.
