I am a Chief Research Officer in the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU). My work involves developing and coordinating a “Youth Focus” within the existing Poverty and Inequality Initiative of the University of Cape Town (UCT). Prior to joining SALDRU/PII, I worked as a Senior Research Officer at the Children's Institute of UCT for 5 years.

I hold a PhD in Sociology from UCT. My dissertation looked at educational decision-making in the era of AIDS.

My research interests include:

  • Youth transitions into adulthood (through education and employment), especially in a context of continued deprivation and inequality and in rapidly changing urban environments;
  • Inequality and transformation in post-apartheid South Africa;
  • Research Methodologies: the use of a Mixed Methods Approach in research
SALDRU current projects: Youth Explorer
