Hayle County Under 14’s Championships - 21st August 2016

posted 4 Sept 2016, 08:44 by Langstone Cutters

Hayle held the 25th County Under 14’s Championships, which is the only event in the racing calendar purely for the U14’s. We all travelled down despite the worrying weather predictions but today was calmer and the venue at Copperhouse Pool was safe and perfect for spectators. Many thanks to Hayle Pilot Gig Club for hosting a great day. Other clubs we spoke to were really impressed that Langstone had made the effort to attend as the majority of clubs there today were from Cornwall, a few from Devon and none from Dorset. It was a long way to go but well worth it! Paula with Molly, Georgie, Amy, Katie, Heidi joined by Tom, who stepped in at the last minute, fought hard in two sprint races, making it through to the final and came 11th out of 20 teams. Well done to all of them, we are very proud of you all and thanks so much to the families and friends who made it down to Cornwall for the second time this summer to support Langstone Cutters Gig Club U14 Juniors. Congratulations to the winning teams, Ilfracombe 1st, Caradon 2nd and Brixham 3rd.

Many thanks to all our club members and family and friends that came along to Hayling's biggest annual social event. You all made it a very successful day and the clubs presence in the community was greatly enhanced.

The rowing challenge encouraged more than 140 entrants of all ages including the Lady Mayoress and Alan Mak our local MP. We had 22 adult applications for a free open row in the near futur
e and 4 junior applications .

Our junior members were superb and many spent up to seven hours helping in every way possible,

Our Main Arena debut appearance in providing family games was great fun, the organisers made a special point in thanking the club for entertaining the children and adults, they especially liked our Egg Tossing and Catching competition, they have asked us to repeat the performance next year .

Our juniors excelled in this competition finishing 4th in the Plate and 12th overall, taking on the might of crews from Devon and Cornwall. The most vocal support for any team came from our supporters, group of parents and members who made the long journey to Cornwall. The good news is that most of our two crews taking part have a further two or more years to row in this competition. Come on Langstone. The photos show our crews in gigs kindly provided by local gig clubs. Even the seals came down from Thorney Island to add their support!

Having to travel over 200 miles did not daunt our loyal following of parents, juniors and rowers in travelling to our lovely friends at Clovelly. Thanks to the outstanding performance of our juniors we were placed 5th overall in a field of 10 clubs. Trophies were won by our junior under 14's crew and Kimberley and Chris D were part of the winning crew in the Barbarian's race. Another highlight was the Tombstoning off the end of the quay in which everyone joined in including the adults in glorious sunshine. As the sun set our hosts provided us with live entertainment for singing and dancing at the Red Lion.
Thank you Clovelly for all your hard work and for putting on such a great Regatta.

Star of Northney went on an outing today to The Hayling College, our local secondary school. We were invited to participate in the CAP (Community Alcohol Partnership) Year 9 Focus Day. The aim of the day was to show the young people what activities are available to them on their doorstep. The idea being to encourage them to participate and make positive choices and divert them from drinking. We took oars, rowing machines, a PowerPoint presentation along with handouts, applications and flyers. Thanks to all who made this day possible, it was really successful and following this we will be holding a Junior Open Rowing session in the school holidays for all those interested in taking the next step. Very exciting times!
