Mount Vernon Archaeology - Slave Cemetery Survey
I was fortunate to be awarded a Mount Vernon Life Guard Teacher Fellowship for the summer of 2015. During the month of July I lived at the estate to conduct research at the Fred W. Smith Library for the Study of George Washington. My project was creating a lesson plan for middle school U.S. History classes that incorporates Mount Vernon and fundamentals of archaeology. My lesson focuses on the survey currently being conducted at the slave cemetery at Mount Vernon. On a couple of occasions I was able to work with the archaeologists on the site and this particular photograph is a panoramic photo taken with my Nexus 6 while taking a break from the dig. It is such a beautiful and tranquil site with shade from the trees above and specific areas in which the sunlight streams to the forest floor.
