The process of finding which colleges you will apply to is daunting.  With over 4,000 colleges in the country, where do you get started?  Here the top  college search sites.  Each of these website has its advantages so checking more than one is a good idea.

Before you start your search, have a list of characteristics you are looking for in a college environment.  CLICK HERE to figure out how to narrow your college choices.    This will make your college search a lot easier!

Using these websites together can help you put together a preliminary list of colleges. But do not rely on such a list alone. You need to research each of the identified colleges in more detail starting with the websites of each college.   Most importantly, it is highly recommended to visit a a college before making the final decision of where to apply.

Lane Tech is pleased to introduce Family Connection from Naviance, a web-based service designed especially for students and parents. Family Connection is a comprehensive website that you can use to help in making decisions about colleges and careers. Family Connection is a service that we use in our Guidance Offices to track and analyze data about our students’ college and career plans. Family Connection will allow you to:

Get involved in the planning and advising process - Build a resume, complete on-line surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers.

Research colleges - Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from students who have already applied from our high school.

Sign up for college visits - Find out which colleges are visiting our school and sign up to attend those sessions.

College Board

College Board’s “BigFuture” is an extensive college search engine.   The best feature is the financial information provided for each college that is identified.  This is one of the few sites that tell students the average amount of need met by each college’s financial aid department.

College Navigator

This is the official college search site of the US Department of Education. You can search for colleges by a number of different criteria, plus you can check out the retention and graduation rates of different colleges.

Princeton Review

Extensive college search information.  Plus, browse college rankings section for a list of top schools in various categories.
