Economic Evaluation and Impact Assessment




Impact assessment, technology transfer in agriculture and their impact on market participants, is one of the major area of my research. I have dealt with issues of economic and environmental benefits from soil and water conservation technologies, impact of irrigation management turn-over, biological substitutes for agro-chemicals, post-harvest management of fish, economic evaluation of fish drying technology, impact of agriculture and rural development, cooperative credits, benefits form modern varieties of rice, impacts of agro-ecosystem research and new research processes  under National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP).
 
My major work under impact assessment include: (1) Economic and financial analysis (economic rate of return, internal rate of return, payback period,etc) of World Bank funded National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP). (2) Impact assessment (cost-benefit analysis, sustainability, etc) of technology including aspects of livestock and dairy, institutions, extension methodology and training programmesdeveloped/ refined under NATP.  (3) Collective action monitoring and impact assessment of water user associations. (4) Analysis of component of costs and benefits from Irrigation Management Turn-Over (IMT) accrued to farmers, government and society. (5) Assessement of impacts of turned over systems on cropping pattern, agricultural production, farm income and employment. (6) Analysis of economic performance and potential of biological substitutes for agrochemical in agricultural production. (7) Estimation of energy demand for crop production in rainfed agriculture.
 
As a researcher at LaTrobe University, Melbourne, Australia, I have developed a model for measurement of benefits from technological change in agriculture. This model provides a superior estimate over most commonly used economic surplus model in two ways. Firstly, it incorporates pecuniary externalities and economies of scale. Secondly, in a single analytical framework, it addresses both equity and efficiency concerns.
