Since we asked the City to fill the water barrels at the garden, there has been plenty of rain! We will have to weed the garden before the cold weather settles in.

The groundhog is eating some plants that he left alone earlier in the season, but other plants that seemed to be off to a slow start are flourishing now. See photos in the "Maintaining the Garden" Section.

9.8.14 Black Chokeberry Bushes

posted Sep 8, 2014, 7:18 PM by Ellen Balthazor   [ updated Sep 8, 2014, 7:18 PM ]

An interesting thing is happening to the Chokeberry bushes: The high and low leaves are fine, but something seems to be eating those at mid-level. An expert will have to look at the situation.

9.3.14 State of the Garden and Fishing Pier

posted Sep 3, 2014, 2:44 PM by Ellen Balthazor   [ updated Sep 8, 2014, 8:35 PM ]

The garden is generally doing very well except for plants whose leaves are being eaten, that now includes some leaves on the chokeberry bushes. The plant that looks a bit like clover (have to check the name) has never flourished, but that is the only one.

The nearby fishing pier now has railings on it. The pier is definitely worth checking out!

The garden is flourishing after yesterday's rain; however, The FdL River appears to be a river of mud.

8.24.14 River and Garden

The Fond du Lac River has been very brown for several days. A couple of weeks ago it had blue-green algae mixed in with the water lilies close to shore.

An interesting thing about the plants is that one will be very vigorous and right next to it will be the same type of plant that is not thriving. It is not because something is eating them although certain varieties are being eaten. See "Maintaining the Garden" section for photos.

8.20.14 MPTC at Garden

posted Aug 20, 2014, 12:34 PM by Ellen Balthazor   [ updated Aug 20, 2014, 12:34 PM ]

This morning a groundhog ( a rather small one) was enjoying the grass outside of the garden. He vanished when I got out of the car to take his photo.

Caron Dougherty and Lisa Ferguson, faculty  members at Moraine Park Technical College, volunteered through the Volunteer Center to work in the Garden. See photos in the "Maintaining the Garden" section.

8.11.14 River water conditions

posted Aug 12, 2014, 8:45 PM by Ellen Balthazor   [ updated Aug 12, 2014, 8:45 PM ]

The river water had a thin layer of "pea soup" on it for a couple of days. Yesterday and today it had what appeared to be blue-green algae "blobs" floating on the surface. Master Gardener Dolores Braun said the algae would not be harmful to the garden plants.

Check the "Maintaining" page for photos of FdL Sailing Club members helping maintain the garden.
