Fun Facts

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway used to be the worlds longest bridge ever built at 24 miles long. Its opened to 2 lanes of toll southbound traffic and two lanes of free northbound traffic. Opened to the public in 1956 and the second in 1969. The average daily traffic as of 1987 is 18,830.

The result was oneway driving safety on straight, twolane railed surfaces 80feet apart connected by seven crossovers that function as pullover areas for auto emergencies.

Total cost for the first bridge, including land
acquisition and approaches was $ 51 million. The
second bridge cost $ 33 million. Estimated cost for a
new bridge exceeds $ 600 million. Daily vehicle
count is now in excess of 30,000.
