 About Me

Ching-Yi Lai was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He received his MS in 2006 and BS in 2004 in electrical engineering from National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan. He received his PhD in 2013 in electrical engineering from University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California.

Currently he is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Communications Engineering, National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan. Previously he was a postdoctoral research associate at the Centre for Quantum Software and Information, University of Technology Sydney from December 2013 to July 2015. Then he was a postdoctoral scholar at the Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica, Taiwan from September 2015 to July 2018.

Prof. Lai received the MOST Young Scholar Fellowship (哥倫布計畫) in 2018 from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan. His research interests include quantum error-correcting codes, fault-tolerant quantum computation, quantum information theory, and quantum cryptography. He has served extensively as a referee for journals and conferences.

  • Post-Doctorate Position in Quantum Error Correction and Quantum Computation, National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan

The research group of Prof. Ching-Yi Lai and Prof. Hsiaofeng Lu at the Institute of Communications Engineering, National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan is hiring a postdoctoral research fellow  in  quantum computing. We are interested in strong candidates with experience in quantum optics, quantum error correction and/or quantum coding theory. The position is under a joint project about silicon-based photonic quantum chips, and the candidate has the potential to work with the experimental quantum optics team led by Ray-Kuang Lee at the National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan.

The initial appointment is available immediately and will expire at the end of October 2019 but is renewable (subjected to a positive internal review) on a yearly basis until the end of October 2024. The starting gross monthly salary for a fresh Ph.D. graduate is TWD56,650 with an increment of approximately TWD2,000 in monthly salary for every complete year of postdoctoral experience accrued after obtaining one's Ph.D. Other benefits of the appointment include (but not limited to) access to be covered by the National Health Insurance of Taiwan (for an appointment that lasts for 6 months or more), 1.5 month of year-end bonus (or prorated according to the duration of appointment), initial relocation expenses, contributions toward the retirement fund by the employer (which can be withdrawn upon termination of the appointment).

Applicants should have a PhD in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or computer science. Experiences in some of the following topics are welcome. Interested candidates may send their CV, research statement,  and arrange three reference letters sent to Ching-Yi Lai at cylai@nctu.edu.tw

  • I am looking for Ph.D. and M.S. students (電信甲) who are motivated to do theoretical research, especially in coding and information theory, quantum computation, and (post)quantum cryptography. Students with backgrounds in communications/ electrical engineering/ computer science/ mathematics/ physics are all welcome. If you are interested, please send me an email.
