Welcome to

"Sustainable Design and Manufacturing Laboratory"

SMMEE, IIT Ropar

The United Nations Development Program defines sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs.” Sustainable design and manufacturing is the main focus of various top-notch labs in the world now. This is because of the intention to improve the current situations such as the climate-change related problem situations, lack of usable resources, and generation of waste. Design engineers of successful companies are confronted with the challenges of designing sustainable products, processes, and services. Achieving sustainability is no longer an option during product development; it has become a part of the design requirement. To achieve sustainability, products, processes, and services must be functional, have less impact on the environment, be economical, and have positive effects on the society.

The school of Mechanical, Materials, and Energy Engineering intends to get involved in the research and teaching of sustainable design and manufacturing, encompassing design and development of various products, processes, and services.

Sustainable Product Design and Manufacturing (SPDM), Laboratory, at Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar, started with the intention of conducting research, teaching, consultancy in the area of sustainable design and sustainable manufacturing.
