Lawn vs Shade

My mother's front lawn - faces west

  • $45 per week for lawn maintenance
  • $30 per quarter for fertilizer/pesticide
  • $20 per month for watering
  • $40 per hot weather month in extra airconditioning

Total cost per year:  $1,060

My mother's shade back yard - faces east

  • $45 per trimester for trimming ivy and bushes
  • $45 per month during fall for gutter cleanout
  • $350 per year to have tree service come each spring to remove dead branches which threaten the house
  • $ -40 per hot weather month for not having to aircondition that side of the house
 Total cost per year:  $460

If I were to maintain her lawn for her, I would need a:

  • lawn mower
  • gasoline container
  • weed eater
  • edger
  • hedge clippers
  • 2 - 3 hours per week = 40 hours every 4 months

If I were to maintain her back yard for her, I would need a:
  • set of pruning shears
  • 2 hours every 4 months

Environmental considerations:
  • Need for fertilizer which runs off into our streams when it rains
  • Need for pesticides which runs off into our streams when it rains
  • Need to water which uses up our resources
  • Creates localized heat in the summer

Environmental considerations:
  • Filters rain water into clean water before it runs off into our streams
  • Filters the air
  • Retains rain water in the soil under the natural leaf litter
  • Creates a cool environment in the summer, while allowing the  sun to heat the house in the winter (because the leaves fall off the trees)
