Vernon Wells

Vernon Wells earned an American League Gold Glove Award in recognition of his outstanding defense today.

He has won this award for three straight seasons, becoming the first Blue Jay to do so since Devon White and Roberto Alomar won five straight times from 1991 to 1995.

The Blue Jays have officially entered into the Vernon Wells era. On Monday, Toronto held a press conference at Rogers headquarters to announce that it had signed Wells to a seven-year, $126 million extension.

The blockbuster deal, which takes effect in the 2008 season, makes Wells just the 13th player in baseball history to receive a contract worth at least $100 million. In fact, the center fielder's new pact represents the sixth-largest deal ever in terms of dollar value
