 About the Klamath Falls Orchestras
The first school orchestra was formed in Klamath Falls in 1908. The addition of a railroad and expansion of the timber industry made Klamath Falls one of the fastest-growing cities in Oregon. As the town grew, so did the school orchestras. In the mid 1940s, Andy Loney was hired with a charge to build a music program that would be second-to-none in the Northwest. Mr. Loney envisioned a comprehensive music program that would serve students from the primary grades through high school, providing instruction in vocal music and all instrument families. In 1957, the Klamath Union Choir and Orchestra were recognized for their musical achievements by performing at the Music Educators National Conference in Los Angeles.
Mr. Loney's vision for music education continues to the present day and we are proud to offer a comprehensive music program that includes instruction in stringed instruments and orchestra.
Since 1991, the Klamath Union High School Orchestra has participated in the Northwest Orchestra Festival, the East Cascades Orchestra Festival, the Heritage Festivals of Music in Los angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Seattle. The orchestra has achieved 1st and 2nd place gold and silver ratings and has been selected as the Outstanding String Orchestra at the Heritage Festivals. The KUHS Orchestra has qualified for the Oregon State Orchestra Championships ten times and were the de-facto 4A State Champions in 2011 and 2012. The KU Orchestra represented the state of Oregon at the National Festival of the States in San Francisco in the spring of 2012. The KU Chamber Orchestra participated in the Northwest Orchestra Festival at Mt. Hood Community college and were Chamber Orchestra Division finalists in 2013 and 2015. In 2016, the Orchestra returned to San Francisco on a 4-day performance tour that included performances at Stanford University, The California Academy of Sciences, and Sausalito Presbyterian Church. During this tour, the group also toured the city and enjoyed the San Francisco Symphony, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman's Wharf and other area attractions.

Klamath Falls is also home to an all-volunteer community orchestra, the Klamath Symphony. Founded in 1976 as the Plum Ridge Symphony, the group has performed under the direction of Don Adkins, Yair Strauss, Walt Wilson, Len Freiser, Ted Swan, Brent Hakanson, Gene Perry, KU alum Alfred Beattie and is currently directed by Steve Mitchell. The group is open to student musicians and advanced high school string players are strongly encouraged to participate. To learn more, go to: http://klamathsymphony.org/
