Learning to be Holy

Kadash, Kadosh, Kodesh

The Hebrew word for this study is Holy. We will look at the verb, adjective, and noun for holy, giving a description for each one. I should note that if you decide to do further study on Holy you may find it spelled with a “q” instead of a “k”, it just depends on where you look. It will still have the same meanings that are in this teaching.

Our first word is Kadash (kah-DASH). Kadash is a verb and it is the Hebrew root word for holy. Kadash means to be set apart, to hallow, to sanctify, to be holy, to show oneself holy, to be treated as holy, to consecrate, to treat as holy, to dedicate, to be made holy, to declare holy or consecrated, to behave, to act holy, to dedicate oneself.

The second word is Kadosh (kah-DOHSH or kaw-doshe) and it is an adjective, but a very important adjective. Kadosh is used to denote someone or something that is inherently sacred, or has been designed as sacred by divine rite or cultic ceremony. It designates that which is the opposite of common or profane. The adjective kadosh is the word used to describe God. The very essence of who God is, is described as being inherently holy, sacred, and set apart. God is the only One of His kind. He alone is utterly pure, perfect, distinct, and set apart. Evil and uncleanness can be found nowhere in Him. He is called “Hakkadosh” - The Holy One. As Hakkadosh, God transcends the realm of the finite, the fallen, and the imperfect and only He is worthy of worship because He alone is perfect and holy. The Hebraic way of giving emphasis to something is to use repetition. God is a God of love, compassion, grace, etc., but when describing His very essence only one word is used in repetition. That word is kadosh, kadosh, kadosh (holy, holy, holy). You will find it in Isaiah 6:1-3 and Revelation 4:8. Because God is holy, He has always required for His people to be holy. In the Old Testament Israel was required to be kadosh [Exodus 19:4-6]. In the New Testament, we, as the Believers in Christ are required to be kedoshim pl. (holy ones) [I Peter 1:15-16]. We are both called to be a holy nation (goy kadosh) unto God. So how do we, as imperfect humans become kadosh? Well, it is a double process. The first step is by position and it happens at the point of salvation. The Holy Spirit [Ruach HaKodesh] baptizes us into Christ and His holiness is imparted into us. The second step is through experience. God says “You shall be holy, because I the Lord your God is holy.” [Lev 19:1-2, 20:7; I Peter 1:16] We have to walk out our holiness by the life we live. That happens through faith, obedience to the Lord and His word, and ultimately, yielding to the Holy Spirit. The more we pray and study God's word, the more that word gets into our spirit man, the easier it becomes to obey the Holy Spirit. If you cater to the spirit man he will be in control, if you cater to the soulish man, he will be in control. It is the difference between the holy and the common or profane(anything that is unholy). God commands us to “come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” [II Corinthians 6:17-18, 7:1]

The final word is kodesh (not kadesh which is a male temple prostitute). Kodesh is a masculine noun which means a holy thing, holiness, and sacredness. It is the essential nature of that which belongs to the sphere of the sacred and which is therefore distinct from the common or profane. This would include holy offerings, vessels and objects consecrated as holy and used strictly for the Lord, food, the Sabbath [Shabbat Kodesh], etc. This word is also used when referring to holy places. Keeping in mind that God's presence makes anything holy remember the burning bush, the holy mountain [har hakodesh], and the Holy of Holies [Kodesh Hakadeshim]. A few other words are the holy land or city [eretz hakodesh], holy language [Lashon Hakodesh]

Golden nugget: Remember that Paul betrothed us to one husband, that he might present us to Christ as a chaste virgin II Corintihians 11:2, Jesus said He is coming back for a wife without spot or wrinkle (in other words consecrated). The name of this ministry group is MeKudeshet. It is taken from the ancient Hebrew wedding vows which says Ha-rey at m'kudeshet li (be thou consecrated unto Me). Our marriage contract with Christ is called kiddushin which literally means “sanctification”.
