The Kansas Prescribed Fire Council will hold its 5th Annual Meeting, Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at the Great Plains Nature Center, Wichita. The Council has made significant strides over the past 12 months and is poised to expand even more to help it meets its mission. As of July, Jason Hartman, KS Forest Service (and former chairman of the Steering Committee), stepped into the role of state fire coordinator under a memorandum of understanding between KFS and KS PFC. Jason will devote his energies to promoting the Council and implementing a number of specific actions. Funds have been secured to keep Jason in place for the next year or so with grant applications in the works that can extend that even further out. Also, a grant application is in process that should allow the KS PFC to work with the Comanche Pool Prairie Resource Foundation to place two regional fire coordinators in the Lesser Prairie Chicken Initiative area (western third of Kansas). Building capacity at the state and local levels is coming together hurriedly. This Annual Meeting should prove to be quite exciting and productive. Look for more details to come, and monitor the KGLC calendar for more details.
