Making Online Quizzes & Exercises

 


A list of free sites, compiled and reviewed by Kristi Reyes, Noncredit ESL instructor, MiraCosta College

I have put together this list of eight of the numerous free choices for making online exercises and quizzes.  The site URL, special features, a sample exercise with the theme of restaurants, and my own ease-of-use rating (the more stars, the easier the site is to use) is shown for each site to demonstrate the differences between the sites and to help in choosing the best site for a particular need.

More info:  Bab.la Tour; Described as a language learning portal; includes quizzes in many languages and in several categories; Click the “Test and Train” tab and then click “Participate” and “Create a quiz”

Types of questions: for grammar, vocab., spelling, reading; can create monolingual or translation/bilingual quizzes; multiple choice  with up to four choices (fill-in-the-blank coming soon)

Media: text and images uploaded from your computer

Sharing: send link in email, post link on website, embed on website or blog

Scores/Records: user sees score upon quiz completion, which can be shared by email option; can also be printed out

Types of questions: for grammar, punctuation, reading comprhension; grammar, spelling, vocabulary; multiple choice (min. 2 choices; max. 10), true/false, free text, short answer, fill in the blank , punctuation; randomize quiz questions and set time limits

Media: text, online images (copy and paste a URL )

Sharing: with student enrollment in a class (student logs in) or by “rebranding” a test and adding it to a group you create, which provides a linkto send in email or on website

Scores/Records: site is a simplified course management system (similar to Blackboard or Moodle) – 1000 users can be enrolled by instructor; marks tests and quizzes for you with quiz results emailed to you  (with upgraded version $25) or saved in ClassMarker (free); results can be downloaded; if test is rebranded, results displayed only to user upon test completion

Requires student registration? YES by instructor if results will be saved in Classmarker; student email needed.  NO if test is rebranded

Must be enrolled as teacher to view other instructors’ quizzes but you can view a Classmarker Demo Quiz

Types of questions:  for spelling/listening/word dictation. Test Me: Students hear each word and a sentence using the word and type in the target word. Teach Me: Students hear and see a word as it is spelled on screen and then hear a sentence usingthe word. Play a Game: Students practice with a word search, “HangMouse,” unscramble, or word matching exercise.

 

Media:  Instructor registers and enters word list (text), the site creates audio files (of words and sentences using words).

 

Sharing:  Students go to the site and click “Find a list,” type in the instructor’s first or last name, and click on the assigned list; send link in email or post link on website. 

Scores/Records: test results displayed only to individual user after test completion

Media: text, links and pop-up messages, images uploaded from your computer, Windows media (audio and video)

Sharing: Only students enrolled in a class set up by the instructor can login and access activities

Scores/Records: Site is a simplified course management system (similar to Blackboard or Moodle); organize course content into units; organize students into classes; enroll up to 100,000 users; marks tests and quizzes for you with quiz results saved in student management section

YES – instructor enrolls student with student email, which student uses to login
