NEW PADDLERS

New paddlers are all welcome to try dragon boating with us!  No prior experience is necessary, knowing how to swim isn't required, and all fitness levels can participate. We provide the equipment (paddles, life jackets/PFD, and instructions), but we recommend that you wear athletic clothing and shoes you don't mind getting a little wet, dress for the weather, bring water, and keep a towel or change of clothes for afterwards. You may want to also bring a waterproof bag for your keys and cell phone if you plan on bringing it on the boat with you.
  • New paddler practice schedule:
    • Offseason (November-February) practices are on Saturdays & Sundays 8:30am-10:00am
    • Regular Season (March-October) practices are on Saturdays 7:30am-9:00am & Sundays 8:30am-10:00am
    • New paddlers are also able to attend the mixed/recreational practices once proficient in the paddle technique.
  • The first three practices are free. A membership fee will be required afterwards that will cover membership for the rest of the season.
  • KP Dragons launch from the Jack London Aquatic Center (115 Embarcadero, Oakland, CA 94607) for practice. A parking lot is available and we meet at the brown metal statue between the boathouse and dock pictured here.
  • Please read the Boat Safety Information and Guest Liability Waiver files attached at the bottom of this webpage. Print out and sign the waiver and the last page of the safety packet, and bring it to your first practice (we have extra forms onsite as well). We must have the signed forms before you board the boat.
    • After your first practice, you can sign up for future practices through the KP Dragons group on TeamSnap. The attachment below has more information.
  • These tutorial videos are a great resource to learn some basic dragon boat fundamentals: Video #1, Video #2, Video #3
