OWNER AND GUEST FEEDBACK

Owner feedback is easy.  We love what we do.  Long, long ago, before moving to Hawaii I worried a bit about isolation, about filling the need for fresh ideas and new faces in my life.  Running a B&B in a place like Kona brings the world to us--or at least an interesting segment of it.  On the rare occasions when we get a disagreeable person or couple I do more farming than usual.  Kana does more shopping.  It really seldom happens.

Guest feedback
is trickier because there are a lot more of you than us.  There's a pretty good web service now called Trip Adviser.  It's good because it written, mostly, by real people.  The main drawback is that it's not so hard for the unscrupulous to manipulate.  ("Hey, my old buddy John, how about writing me twenty excellent reviews using different e-mail addresses?")  There are also a number of nuts out there, believe it or not, and I try my best to keep them away.  I don't want to be around them and I don't want my other guests to have to be around them either.
Still, the reviews can give a traveler a pretty fair impression of an unknown place.  Here's what a few of my former guests have had to say about their stay at the Edge (I'll leave their names off to protect the innocent).

--We stayed with Kurt and Kana (and Jenna) at the Edge of the World B & B for four beautiful days this month, and hated to leave their warm and welcoming bit of paradise on earth. Each morning brought a beautifully presented and delicious breakfast, always with fruits freshly picked from their garden and home-grown coffee; each day brought an ...

--Edge of the World was amazing. We were served fresh fruit, grown on the property, every morning. The room was comfortable and spacious. The hosts were friendly and sincere. The VIEW was AMAZING! Nestled on a mountainside, one can see the Pacific down below--looking over acres of starfruit, noni, and mango trees. Kurt took his time to give us a ...

--This fantastic place offers both world class views as well as very experienced, knowledgeable and exceedingly friendly people. It is very quiet and perfect for honeymoon (from own experience) and any kind of travel. The positioning within Hawaii island is perfectly suited for a wide range of activities within reasonable reach. Service is very unintrusive - the place is flawlessly...

--The Edge has been definitely one of the most agreable stay during our trip on the Hawaiin Islands, especially the perfect breakfast, the view from the lanai with wonderful sunsets and the nice conversations filled with a lot of hints where to go snorkelling or traveling around. The rooms are very lovely designed, there is a fridge for your personal...

--This B&B has it all - large comfortable rooms, excellent breakfasts, and a fantastic view from the lanai. We enjoyed picking up take-out dinners and eating on our private lanai while watching the sunsets. Our welcoming host and hostess were able to provide us with tips on where to sight see and snorkel which was very helpful. I heartily recommend...

--We had a remarkable stay at this peaceful place, filled with gentle sounds of nature and the countryside, and with a harmonious family as our hosts and guides to the island. The Edge makes a perfect base for exploring the Big Island, although you might feel the urge to stay on your lanai all day. Thank you Kurt, Kana, and...

--The view will keep you on the lania for hours. You are at treetop level watching the birds and absorbing the beauty of the bay while you enjoy a fantastic breakfast. Each morning we planned an early start -- never happened! The conversations with the other guests and our hosts made the time fly. You are offered a choice of...

--We spent 4 nights in March at this B & B. We had the Pacific Room. It was spacious and clean with a huge bathroom and changing area attached. The mattress was firm and comfortable. We had a TV with cable. Kurt, our host, offered us the use of his movie collection (though I would go to sleep early exhausted by...

--I stayed for a week at the Edge in early May, 2008. It was fantastic. Great rooms, super breakfasts, very near lots of neat stuff to do--like the best snorkeling in Hawaii, ocean kayaking across Kealakekua Bay, hikes, the Place of Refuge. The hosts, Kanae and Kurt were very friendly and very helpful. They made me feel right at home....

And one from one of those folks you'd rather not meet

--We booked a room 3 months in advance. About 4 weeks before arrival the owner cancelled our reservation because he wanted to sell the room to somebody else. We had to look for another place on our own and had to pay 50 % more! The owner did not care at all and ignored our e-mails. If you do not ...   Owner comment-- Whackorama.  Email communication with this person led me to believe he was mentally unstable.  Interaction with other guests (and with my family) would have likely been unpleasant and potentially dangerous.  I provided him with four alternative places to stay, Happily, he is the only guest in 14 years of running the Edge that we felt this action was necessary.

In summary, I think the best indication that we've been doing things right over the past ten years is the return rate.  I think they account for about a quarter of our total number of guests now.  Kana and I really enjoy it when folks come back after a year or two, and each time they come they usually stay a little longer.  Nice.
