Sugata Marjit – Profile of a Vocalist
Sugata Marjit is a North Indian ( Hindusthani) Classical Vocalist specializing in singing Khayal. His music has grown out of an uninterrupted stretch of training for 35 years. He has received his training primarily from Late Sri K. C. Banerjee, well known student of great master Sangeetacharya Bhismadab Chatterjee, disciple of Ustad Badal Khan of Rangeela Gharana . Sugata has also received talim from Pandit T. D. Janorikar of Vindibazar Gharana. . Sugata’s music is reflective of purity, rewaaz, the intensity and variety of his grooming and his musical personality. In his rendition the nuances of Ustad Amir Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Pandit Kumar Gandharv have significant yet non- overpowering influence.
Over the last twenty years he has performed in many concerts in India, notable among them are, National Centre for Performing Arts, Mumbai, Sangeet Research Academy concert, Sadarang Sangeet Sammelan, 50th year of India’s Independence Concert, hosted by the Upper House of Parliament in Delhi at the IIC, IIT Festivals Bombay and Kharagpur, Park Circus Music Conference, Calcutta, Sursagar Society Concert, Calcutta, Rising Talents Conference etc. He has performed extensively in USA, Europe, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Gloriously reviewed by press in India and abroad for imaginative and independent style of performance, Sugata has also lectured on music in various Academies of performing Arts and Universities world wide including Hong Kong University. He was an adjunct lecturer at the well known Victoria College of Arts in Melbourne. His maiden CDs have been released by the India Music Archive in New York and are available in major outlets across the globe. He has recorded a few more which are to be released soon. His endeavor as a composer brought him the West Bengal State Drama Academy Award for a play in 1995. He has also performed on various channels of Indian Television.
Sugata, a topper of University of Calcutta in Economics, has a Phd from the University of Rochester, USA and currently holds a Chair Professorship and Directorship of a premier social science research institute of the country. National Awards winner as a young Social Scientist and as an Economist, Sugata has lectured at several Universities all around the globe. Sugata is a well known commentator in National and International TV channels and BBC World Service and a regular columnist of the most widely circulated Bengali Daily ( around 1 million), the well known “Anandabazar Patrika”.
