I first started training in Judo at the age of seven, & continued in a YMCA dojo until middle school, and on into high school, when I joined the wrestling team.
While stationed in Okinawa Japan with the Navy in 1990, I was fortunate to be able to study Tai-ji Quan with a local sifu who traveled to China regularly, & with one of his students who was stationed at Kadena Air Base. It was there, too, that I was first introduced to Aikido, although there was no local dojo that I was able to get to on a regular basis.
After returning to Blacksburg I continued training in Tai-ji locally, & was able to join the Kodokan dojo in 1995, under Truman Capone Sensei.
In recent years, I have begun to see the close ties between the movement & form of Yang style Tai-ji & Kodokan Aikido, enjoying the experience of blending the techniques, & discovering where they overlap.
