Each year the Celi-ACT Support Group sponsors a camp for children with celiac disease and gluten intolerance for one week every summer. The camp offers the opportunity for campers to learn leadership and teamwork as well as focus of goal setting, risk-taking, trust and self-esteem issues. Adventure opportunities at the camp include high ropes, rock climbing and rappelling, a climbing wall, Giants ladder, caving, canoeing and kayaking. Other activities include nature walks, swimming, crafts, fellowship, and communal meals. Gluten-free meals are provided in order to provide a great opportunity for children to participate fully in camp activities without worrying about their food.
Children who have completed 2nd to 8th grades are encouraged to come experience camp with other kids who know what it’s like to have a restricted diet in a gluten filled world. By interacting with other children it helps lessen the anxiety that can so often be associated with following a gluten-free diet and dealing with a medical condition.
