Have you ever listened to a student read a list of words perfectly? However, when you ask the child what a particular word means, they have no idea and cannot use it in a sentence. Focusing on having a student recognize and read aloud a list of words is useless if they do not know the meanings. Facilitating students as they build vocabulary skills along with word recognition should be a goal of all teachers.
