Research Interests


Background


My basic education is in theoretical physics with a master thesis in mathematical quantum field theory. My PhD-studies I completed in the field of applied mathematics with focus on partial differential equations and multigrid methods for convection dominated transport equations. In was heavily involved in the development of the software package UG, a platform for discretization and solution of partial differential equations on massively parallel computers. During my PhD-studies I was additionally concerned with a Research- and Development project of the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) related to the riskassessment of nuclear waste disposal in the salt formation at the Gorleben site in northern Germany. The project involvedĀ  12 employees/ 5 universities during 1995-1998. I was in charge of the overall management as well as the scientific leader of the group concerned with fast solution schemes. In my post-doctoral period until my Habilitation in mathematics, my research activities were based on software development and research related to various aspects of porous media flow and transport. Furthermore, I was concerned with teaching courses in mathematics and Scientific Computing on graduate as well as undergraduate level.


Research Interests

My research interests lie in the interdisciplinary field of applied mathematics, engineering sciences, software engineering and computing. I am interested in the mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of real world problems, with the current focus on porous media flow and transport. With respect to mathematics, I am interested in the discretization and solution of time-dependent nonlinear partial differential equations, in fast solution schemes, which can handle features like convection dominance, anisotropies, incompressibility, stability of time-integration. With respect to environmental sciences, I am interested in miscible displacement- and multi-phase-porous media flow and transport and its characteristics (bifurcations, fingering, upconing). With respect to computing I am interested in software-engineering and infrastructural components (High-Performance- and Grid-Computing).
