Hawaiian Immersion

Ka Papahana Kaiapuni Hawai‘i

Hawai'i is the only state in the United States that has designated a native language, Hawaiian, as one of its two official state languages. In 1987, in light of the Hawai'i State Constitution mandate (Article X, Section 4) to promote the study of Hawaiian culture, language and history and the persistent requests of parents and Hawaiian community leaders, the Department of Education established the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program, Ka Papahana Kaiapuni Hawai'i. (from http://www.k12.hi.us/~kaiapuni/)

Ka Papahana Kaiapuni is committed to the use of the Hawaiian Language as the medium of instruction for students in grades K-12. The program strives to provide a quality education based on knowledge of the Hawaiian language and culture as the foundation upon which individuals become responsible, sensitive and productive adults who contribute significantly to all levels of Hawai'i's community.

Ke Kula Kaiapuni ‘o Maui ma Kekaulike

Maui’s high school Hawaiian Language Immersion Program was established on the campus of King Kekaulike High School in 1997 and celebrated its first graduating class in the year 2000. As students enter into the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program at the high school level, their course work encompasses the learning of both the English and Hawaiian Languages. Students participate in hands-on learning experiences as well as academic subjects to prepare them for college or the work force. The HLIP is considered a pathway with course offerings specifically designed each year of high school. Below are the course listings by grade level.
