The Foolish Five Race Report

posted 4 Apr 2011, 09:59 by Jason Chapman
The second event organised by the ‘Kiwi Classic Events’ team, was staged in Hyde. The aptly named ‘Foolish Five’ taking place a couple of days after 1st April.

On the whole conditions stayed dry; despite a few downpours in the days leading up to the race, but those who chose the road shoe option lived to regret the decision. More of that shortly!

The race started in a small field with about 100 competitors starting out. After a 20 metre sprint it went down a path and onto the Trans Pennine Trail. The runners slowly spread out along the trail before coming off the path up a twisty un-adopted road, Green Lane. With the help of the marshals, there was then a main road to cross, before a significant climb takes everyone up to the Cenotaph at Werneth Low and the stunning views across the surrounding countryside with the city centre in the distance.

Circling the Cenotaph the path heads out along a walkers footpath coming out at the top of  Apple Street, a country lane, before descending down a narrow footpath and across a field, emerging once again at the bottom of Apple Street. After a short stretch of tarmac, a left turn took everyone down a Bridleway, before once again crossing the marshalled main road.

This is where anyone with new shoes took a deep breath! Once through the farm, runners descend down a path, affectionately known as the ‘Bog of Doom’. Despite the dry weather there was still a lot of mud!

Once through the bog, with wet, soggy & very dirty shoes, the route took the runners across an open field & then they had to negotiate a stream crossing, eventually coming out at some farm houses. Once past the houses they picked up the footpath taking them back onto Green Lane, before retracing the outward route to the Finish.

First Male Home was Andi Jones of Salford Harriers in 27:30, from Gavin Hill, of East Cheshire Harriers in 30:13. The Ladies race was won by Donna Jones from Sale Harriers (35:25) making it a husband & wife double. Second place was Jannine Ridgard from East Cheshire Harriers.

Our next race is the Royal Wedding Day 5Km on the 29th April at 10:00am
