What is Colorguard & Winterguard?
Colorguard & Winterguard have often been called “The Sport of the Arts” because it combines artistry and performance with athleticism and precision. Members are trained like athletes, but perform as artists. Modern color guards use flags, sabres, rifles, and occasionally other equipment, in addition to utilizing ballet, jazz, modern, and contemporary modern dance.
Imagine a Broadway show with the precision of the military! We also use the elements of expression along with equipment and movement to tell a story. The music and scenery set the stage but the performer completes the show!
The Kamiak Winterguards are acclaimed across the NW as a premier Colorguard & Winterguard program. In addition to Multiple A & Open Class NWPA Championships the guard has also been a WGI Regional Finalist, and recently was a Semi Finalist in the WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH placing in the top 35 groups in the country.
Our program emphasizes:
Excellence in all aspects of one’s life
Teamwork and cooperation
Confidence in one’s self and one’s abilities
Despite and because of a growing program we are more and more in need of additional help to fund transportation and scholarships for students in financial need. Please consider donating whatever you can to help this amazing program make it down the road.
Our 2 main reasons for fundraisers this year are 2 large trips we have planned that are unusually expensive:
1) Trip to Portland, OR for a regional show with the Northwest Pageantry Association. This is the first time in over 12 years that the NWPA has hosted a competition in Oregon. Both our Varsity and JV groups are planning on attending, but the cost of a school bus is over 1600.00 plus a hotel for a our bus driver. We've already driven costs down by securing free housing, but we need help with the cost of a school bus that is dramatically higher than anticipated.
2) Trip to Dayton, OH for the WGI National Championships (pending district approval)! The Varsity guard is planning on attending the Winterguard International Championships. Unlike most groups around the country, we have no WGI regional near us to attend. Also Because of our great distance we HAVE to fly while many groups can drive. We also have to ship our floor and equipment there. Additionally there are not many scholastic groups from the NW that make the trek to Dayton, OH at all! In fact the last time a scholastic group from the NW made finals at WGI was in the mid 90's. That is nearly 20 years ago! Despite all the reasons this trip is HARD, we are endeavoring to show WGI, the nation, and the World, that there are great hardworking colorguards here in the NW! Help us make that dream a reality!
Giving to Kamiak Winterguards is also tax deductible! Kamiak Performing Arts Boosters is a 501c3. Always check with your tax or accounting professional however.
Consider funding this amazing and growing program that provides an amazing and educational team experience to so many.
Marching JacketsHave you gotten your marching jacket to the dry cleaners for cleaning before being stored away until May and our parade season. Please take your marching jacket (minus the silver sash (baldric) this can be stored in the shako box) to the Mukilteo Speedway Cleaners by Walgreens/Starbucks. They will give show band members a good price on dry cleaning the marching jackets. They will also mark down each jacket that they clean so we know who has followed through with this request.Bibbers (old and new)Please return your old bibbers to Mr. Bathurst for collection. Many thanks to those of you have turned them in. Show TopsMany thanks to those of you have returned your freshly hand washed and air dried show tops. Again, we appreciate your cooperation in getting this done! We still have over 20 names on the 'white board of shame'. Let's get those in before Thanksgiving Break, please! If you have not returned your clean show top, you may give that to Mr. Bathurst for collection.
