When my daughter Larissa was in grade two at school, her class studied astronomy. I built a small reflecting telescope with her (see Larissa's Telescope at right). It renewed within me an interest in this area. So, I built my own telescope and joined the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC). I have spent many nights in the countryside stargazing and have completed the RASC Explore the Universe certificate. I have enjoyed reading Timothy Ferris' “Coming of Age in the Milky Way”, “Seeing in the Dark”, “The Whole Shebang” and “The Red Limit”. What amazez me most is the size of our universe - galaxies that are millions of light years across and billions of light years from each other. There is an image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field that is absolutely breathtaking. It pictures 10,000 galaxies in an area of the sky the size of a pinhead held at arms length.
