Teaching Statement

From my teaching statement: 'I
have become less and less comfortable with the labels of “teacher” and “professor.” If a gardener gardens and a baker bakes, that means that a teacher teaches and a professor professes. These are part of what I do, but it cannot be the whole of it. My job is to enable student learning more than to teach material for students to learn. Selecting material and teaching content is part of a teacher’s job, but so is creating an environment where students can own their learning and learn from themselves and each other as much as the teacher. I try to be a teacher some of the time, but an enabler of learning all of the time.'
