Research Statement

From my Research Statement: "My research is best categorized as intellectual history, an interdisciplinary focus somewhere between history and philosophy. By way of methodology, I use both historiography and philosophical analysis to study ideas and their expositors in order to put narratives together as to how ideas about education have developed and helped shape the history of education."

"[My Work] focuses largely on the philosophical ideas underlying educational discourse. Questions like: How have theorists talked about the nature of autonomy and whether compulsory education contributes to it or detracts from it? How have theorists juggled the competing (liberal democratic) ideals of education-for-acculturation versus education-for-individualization? Understanding the history of different views of education, I think, will aid us in thinking through the complexities of our current educational system."
