Hello Again A Musical

Hello Again is the musical adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s play La Ronde (1897).  The scandal of La Ronde’s subject matter, the transmission of syphilis in the upper and lower echelons of Viennese society, prevented any public performances until 1921, and even then the play was still deemed too obscene and was immediately shut down.  As in Schnitzler’s original, LaChiusa’s musical adaptation has ten nameless characters that pair up in ten different scenes of sexual pleasure.  One character from each scene moves on to the next, seemingly dumping their old partner in favor of new prey.  We encounter the Whore, the Soldier, the Nurse, the College Boy, the Young Wife, the Husband, the Young Thing, the Writer, the Actress and the Senator, in vignettes that travel through a century of time; a musical roundelay of sexual obsession, desire and despair.  LaChiusa’s re-telling is set in America:  New Orleans, Biloxi, Boston, Manhattan, Hollywood and Washington D.C.  What is stolen and what is caught is central to the rhythm and intent of this round dance.  The characters are all in motion, taking an unsettled ride on a sensual and erotic sex machine -- having sex anywhere, even in the air.
