10th July 2012: Ciarrai Amach backs Cork City Council’s Landmark ‘Gay Marriage’ Vote

posted 8 Oct 2012, 07:15 by Kerry LGBT Project   [ updated 8 Oct 2012, 07:17 ]

Ciarrai Amach, the Kerry LGBT Project that supports lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender people across Kerry, is delighted that their neighbouring County Council has backed ‘gay marriage’.

History was made in the Republic of Ireland on Monday night when Cork City Council became the very first local authority to vote for gay marriage which happened at the end of their council meeting. It was passed unanimously without any debate by any member, regardless of their political persuasion. A similar motion has already been passed by Belfast City Council.

Martin Greenwood, Chair of Ciarrai Amach, who will next month have his own same sex Civil Partnership in Kerry, said ‘this action will hopefully trigger other local authorities to put forward and adopt similar motions, to help support a full legislative and constitutional change for same sex marriage’. ‘It’s just about any two people having the same rights and opportunities as any other two people who want to get together, regardless of what gender they are’ said Martin.

Ciarrai Amach is a community and voluntary based organisation that promotes the rights and visibility of the LGBT community in Kerry and earlier this year, the group were finalists in the Kerry Community Awards 2012.

Ciarrai Amach is a partner with many community bodies across Kerry, including Family Resource Centres, North & East Kerry Development, South Kerry Development Partnership and Kerry Council Community & Voluntary Forum. For further information please contact the project number on 086 078 8260 or google ciarraiamach.

ERRYWIDE (KERRY LGBT GROUPS)

SECOND DEVELOPMENT SESSION

24 SEPTEMBER 2011, TRALEE I.T

Hayley Fox-Roberts, Regional Development Worker, LGBT Diversity North West

Bernadette Smyth, Regional Development Worker, LGBT Diversity South East

(Individuals are welcome to attend, it is not necessary to be affiliated with a group, if you would like to have an input on everything below, please come along on the day)

INTRODUCTION

A collective of Kerry LGBT groups invites you to a facilitated meeting to consider an umbrella group for the county and how it would operate.

This piece of work comes out of a session that Hayley Fox-Roberts and Bernadette Smyth (Regional Development Workers with LGBT Diversity) facilitated in March 2011 with representatives of CiarraiAmach, North Kerry & West Limerick Group (Listowel LGBT) and The Butterfly Project.

One of the agreed concrete actions was to further explore the viability of an umbrella grouping to support network development and communication between these and other LGBT groups in the region. It was suggested that an umbrella group could knit groups in the region together and create a stronger position with statutory organisations, and could create a strong LGBT network.

OUTLINE OF THE DAY

Bernadette Smyth and Hayley Fox-Roberts were invited to complete this body of work at a second development day in the autumn.

This day has now been scheduled for Saturday 24th September at Tralee IT and has been expanded to include all groups in the region.

LGBT Diversity, through its Regional Development Workers, actively supports the development of a cohesive LGBT sector in the Kerry region, and will use this second development day to assist the groups in identifying opportunities and challenges around the structure, management and maintenance of such an umbrella organisation.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DAY

 An effective and workable umbrella structure will be agreed.

 All voices will have been heard.

 Each group will feel a sense of ownership and identity within this umbrella group

 Each group will be confident in its autonomy within this umbrella group.

 An Action and Development Plan for the umbrella group will be initiated.

 Each group will be better informed on the practice and objectives of other groups in the region.

 A communications mechanism for linking with other LGBT initiatives and organisations outside Kerry will be explored.

Unfortunately this day had to be postponed as there was a lack of commitment to attend from individuals/groups who had attended the first session.

Ciarraí Amach was disappointed that the event could not go ahead. We as an organisation will continue to support and nurture individuals and groups within the Kerry LGBT community who wish to get involved and make a difference.

Our doors are always open.
