History of Ciarrai Amach

Homophobia: Challenge It, Change It, End It.

Ciarrai Amach, Kerry LGBT Project was founded in January 2008 by members of Kerry's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Questioning/Queer (LGBT) community.

Main Aim: To provide a support and social network for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, questioning, queer (LGBT) people in Kerry.

Mission statement: "To promote the rights and visibility of LGBT people"

How it began:

It was sparked off as an idea when the Southern Gay Men's Health Project facilitated a ten week Personal Development Course for gay men in Killarney, during the Autumn of 2007. Strong bonds of friendship were formed and social events were arranged, the men decided to extend the invitation throughout Kerry making use of online social media and personal contacts.

It was immediately apparent from these first open LGBT social gatherings that people were looking for something more, the idea of an outlet where they could express their sexual orientation while living and working within Co. Kerry was formed.

In January two meetings were held in Killarney whereby it was decided to establish an umbrella organisation which would strive to meet the needs of LGBT people living and working in Kerry.

A committee was formed and an open meeting with various LGBT social groups from Cork took place to discuss the various events and social groups that could be formed.
This first committee started life under the name "Kerry Gay & Lesbian Project", a subsequent committee changed the name to Ciarrai Amach, Kerry LGBT Project, so the organisations name would better reflect the diversity of the community within Kerry.

Ciarraí Amach from the beginning has encouraged, promoted and supported independent LGBT groups and services countywide.
It is important that individuals and groups of individuals take ownership of their needs within their local areas. Ciarraí Amach can offer advice and support to individuals wishing to make a difference, who wish to start a group, service, or hold an event in their local area. Diversity makes us stronger, ownership empowers us.
