Buah Pala

Buah Pala in English Language is Nutmeg. It play an important role in the Malaysian cuisine. It has been use widely in Nyonya cooking as spice, to get the sweet and savory flavour. Mostly in sweet and spicy dishes. It grows healthly on Berapit Hill in Bukit Mertajam, Pulau Pinang.

Binomial name for Buah Pala is Myristica fragrans.

The tree is an evergreen tree. The tree can grown high up from 4 m to 15 m.

Some fruits look round like eggs and some looks a bit like peach. It's about 4 cm to 6 cm in width. The length is about 4 cm to 5 cm. Diameter about 5.5 cm.

When it is ripe the colour is yellow. When you open it in half, the flesh is about 1cm to 1.5 cm thick.

The fresh fruit taste a bit sour and bitter in tougue. So the local people mostly process the fruit as preserved sweet nutmeg or candies.

It is use as a spice which we can use to add  into the dough mixture to make pastry, dessert, cake also.

Some Chinese housewife will buy about o.5 kg of nutmeg and steam it with the 0.5 kg rock sugar, to get pure nutmeg juice. Then take 1 or  2 spoons of this pure nutmeg juice, add in hot water, so it will become nutmeg hotdrink. If you like it cold, just add in ice cube. Well ! Definitely it is a refreshing good nutmeg drink. You can order this drink in some of the local coffee shops.

The membrane of the seed is red in colour and called as mace. This mace mostly use to process as sauce. Some put into the milk to add the fragant flavour. Some put the nutmeg as an ingredient in the cake. It also sold in ground mace.

The seeds is in dark brown colour and it's a bit shining.

The seed and the aril contain oil. It can be process into the nutmeg oil for applying on body and perfume.

Crashed fine for the dried nutmeg and in a frew drips of water. It is a bit hot. Apply  a little bit of this dried nutmeg on the forehead and back of the neck. It was believe that can relieve the headche.

Please keep in the mind that:

Do not take more than 25 g or 5 teaspoons of nutmeg, cause of possibility caught the "nutmeg poisoning". psychiatric and thought disorder will happened and all these cases may be will resulted in hospitalization. It is also very dangerous for the intravenous injection of nutmeg and result of fatal can be happened.

If the prenancy woman eat large quatity of nutmeg , it probably can inhabits prostagladin production for pregnancy woman cause it contains hallucinogens that may impact the fetus.
