New Year, New Art at Kate Studio Bellingham

Dear Artsy Friends,
Happy New Year! I am really excited to begin this creative journey in 2018.  Last year, I was fortunate to learn more about fused glass, glass tile mosaic and ceramics, and this year, I look forward to putting a lot of those techniques I learned to work, both in the art I create, and what I offer in my workshops and classes.  I am a firm believer that being creative enhances all the other areas in our lives, and I hope we can make this journey together.  What does the New Year mean for you creatively?

November Art News

posted Nov 1, 2017, 9:49 AM by Kate Studio Art

Hello My Artsy Friends!
Isn't it beautiful to see the trees change color and feel that bite in the air that beckons in a new season?  I find it is a great time to create in my studio, as it's warm and cozy inside and I love to watch the deer walk through the red and yellow leaves that have fallen outside the art studio window.
There's so much to do creatively here.  I have on the calendar a few new courses, one of the best art/craft shows in the Northwest and some opportunities to make some gifts for the holidays. So if you are needing some "me" time or would like to comes over to try something new, please give me a call!

What's New?

Day of the Dead Workshop
The annual Mexican celebration of Dia de los Muertos also known as The "Day of the Dead" is on November 1st and 2nd. It is a festive holiday for families to pay tribute to those who have passed on. During this time, people decorate their home alters and journey to their family cemeteries to decorate and remember in a festive, fun, colorful way with skulls, food, photographs and flowers. It is believed that the departed return home to enjoy the beauty of these offerings.

We will learn about the vibrant cultural tradition of this practice in the workshop. The colorfully painted skull can be a commemoration of a person you are honoring. Work with paint (with paint pens), glitter and gems to bling up a paper mache skull.

Day: Saturday, October 28th, 2-4:30pm
Place: The Foundry Makerspace
1000 F St., Bellingham, WA

What happens in Vegas...

posted Apr 6, 2016, 12:33 PM by Kate Studio Art   [ updated Apr 8, 2016, 10:00 PM ]

When I lived in San Jose, CA, I hung out a wonderful group of friends who were all artists of different mediums.  What we all had in common was a love of art and learning.  We all shared our passions with each other, teaching precious metal clay, fused glass, knitting, metal working, and paired it with a good wine and a delicious potluck.
I moved to Bellingham about a year and a half ago, and although I have made some incredible artist friends, my homies will always stay in my heart. Last week, we decided to have a reunion at the Glass and Bead Expo in Las Vegas and take courses in different glass techniques, followed by dinners and a crazy night of slot machines.  I can't tell you how much fun it was to be with the girls again!  Our dinner conversations always started with a round robin of excitedly talking about what we learned at our courses and showing photos we took of our work.   I took a two day course from Gail Stouffer of Kiln Frog Studios in Texas on how to make our marks in glass.  I learned how to make a screen print and made different types on several pieces of glass.  I was so impressed by the results I am purchasing all the equipment to do the same.

On my third day, I took a course in glass inclusions in ceramics from Michael Harbridge of Fired Arts in Wisconson.  Wow. Mind Blown. Imagine my thrill when I met a man who also shared my obsession with glass and ceramics and who figured out a way to combine the two!

I am really excited to improve these new skills and pass on what I've learned to students at my Kate Studio workshops.

Feeling incredibly blessed,
Kath.

Belle of the Ball

posted Dec 11, 2015, 12:23 PM by Kate Studio Art   [ updated Dec 11, 2015, 12:30 PM ]

Last night I was honored to be one of five artists to be presenting their art at the Edgemoor Chuckanut Life Magazine's Ball at the Lairmont Manor in Bellingham.  The Magazine gathers residents together so they will become part of a greater community, and get to know each other.  It was wonderful to meet so many people who live close to me in Bellingham.  I was also really lucky to tell people my story -- how my glass business burst on the scene when clothing designers began using my jewelry in their runway shows and styling for photoshoots.  I also invited everyone to experience Kate Studio -- not only to see the jewelry I create, but to find their own inner artist and come and make their own fused glass creations, paint, play with clay or sculpt.  It was an amazing night, and I'm grateful for the opportunity!

Looking ahead for the holidays...

posted Nov 15, 2015, 2:08 PM by Kate Studio Art

I am truly blessed to be doing what I love -- sharing art with new friends and children.  This holiday season, there are so many exciting things scheduled, I can hardly wait.  First off, by mid-November, you'll be able to find my fused glass jewelry at the wonderful Jansen Art Center in Lynden.  I am honored they like my work!  On December 10th, You'll find me at the Lairmont Manor, talking about my fused glass business to Chuckanut neighbors and businesses.

For the craft lovers, there's some fun things happening. I've put together an event called "Gift-a-palooza" which truly is an event not to be missed.  I've paired all my favorite things --- food, drink, dancin' music and fused glass.  We'll be making fused glass gifts all night and having a little party.  See "Adult Classes" for more details!

New this year, I am teaching how to make embossed metal tooling ornaments.  Sooooo much fun, pressing, piercing and coloring.  These ornaments will be perfect for your tree or hanging on the window.   I am really looking forward to this project, as it's one of those artworks that is perfect for ages 3-99.  Please join me in these creative upcoming weeks. I'm always open to new ideas or private artsy parties with your friends.  Ciao! x0x Kath.

Finding a Friend in the Foundry

posted Sep 2, 2015, 10:10 AM by Kate Studio Art

There's this wonderful place in Bellingham called "The Foundry." It's a community workshop for inventive, creative people. The purpose is to learn to use traditional and cutting-edge tools & technology to make what interests you.  They have courses like 3-D modeling and woodshop, and coming up, we have partnered to host a "Design a Day of the Dead Skull" on October 17th!!!  I'm so very, very, excited to work with them, as they are an incredibly inspirational team which values creativity as much as I do.  We will be having two courses on October 17th -- a daytime one for families and an evening one for couples which we are partnering with Aslan Brewery to also provide a discount at the restaurant or beer with the class. (more to come on that).  Please put the day on your calendar and join us to paint, glitter, bling, draw etc. on a skull!

Art Retreat Fulfills a Long-Held Dream

posted Jun 29, 2015, 1:54 PM by Kate Studio Art

This past weekend I hosted my first art retreat in Kate Studio.  The studio has been running for almost 10 months now, and we were more than ready to show the world what we had to offer.  Our amazing group of women began their adventure with a strong cup of coffee and sculpural materials to create the most interesting flower-like creations on canvas.  Later, we spray painted them to maintain a monotone color.  That's me below spray painting one of the student's amazing sculptures.   I still get giddy when I get to spray paint.  It's weird.

After a snack of my sister and daughter's to-die-for cranberry and white chocolate scones, we dove into my specialty, fused glass jewelry.  I think everyone enjoyed slicing and dicing the glass and learning all about how to design a gorgeous piece.  Everyone did at least 3 or 4 art pieces and I loaded them in the kiln. You didn't want to be in the kiln room that day.  It was 90 degrees as it was that sunny day, and add that to the 1425 degrees I was heating the glass to, and it was one hot place to be!

I was incredibly fortunate to have artists who wanted to teach with me and offer a fun variety of classes over the weekend.  My sincere gratitude goes out to silversmith and glass artist Denise Relke of sportyjewels.com who drove down from Canada and did an incredible job showing us how to work with copper and silver, pounding, filing, scraping, drilling holes and attaching pearls and crystals to our gorgeous jewelry.   They were sooooo shiny!

On Sunday, we had a wonderful morning eating pastries and sipping mimosas as we got to know artist Phyllis Howard.  Phyllis is a local artist who is known for her multi-media paintings, sculptures and textural works.  You can get an idea how talented she is here:
http://phyllis-howard.artistwebsites.com
Phyllis brought in the most delicious hand-made papers to collage, and had up attach two canvasses together to make these beautiful artworks.  Everyone's was AMAZING.

It was hard to follow Phyllis, so we decided to head to beautiful Fairhaven for lunch and then get inspired at the Whatcom Art Market there.  Phyllis and I are members of the Whatcom Art Guild, and we're proud to display our art there.  I hope the ladies enjoyed seeing the more than 50 artist's works on display.

We headed back to the studio by 3pm, refilled our wine and got working on our final painting, an inspirational message.  I showed everyone some art journaling techniques, such as working with a Gelli monoprinting plate, zendoodling, photo transfer, modeling paste texture and stamping, and they just ran with it!  Some wonderful work, and I am incredibly grateful to the students and instructors for making my dream come true!  Looking forward to the next one, but first....a  little sleep.
