About Dr. Burkes

It has always been my passion to be an educator. I have 35 years of experience teaching in various capacities, including high school, adult education, and higher education.  I started teaching online in 2003. I moved into higher ed administration in 2007, although I still also teach online and in the classroom.

I am originally from New York, just north of Manhattan in the beautiful Hudson Valley. I moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma when I was a teenager, and then to northwest Arkansas for college at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.  I got married shortly after graduation, and then moved near Dallas, Texas, where we had our four children [now 33, 31, 26 and 22].  I returned to graduate school for my MA, and finally my PhD in Applied Technology and Performance Improvement from the University of North Texas (UNT).  We moved back to northwest Arkansas in 2007.

I work full-time as the Associate Dean of Distance Learning & Faculty Development at NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC), and teach part-time.  My professional interests include Open Educational Resources (OER), new educational technologies and online instructional design.  In my downtime, I enjoy gardening, PBS, social media, reading biographies, and spending time with my grandchildren.  I also have a miniature dachshund and two cats.
