Department of Translation and Interpreting

The process of fundamental social and economic changes, in line with the technological progress, as well as the progression of our Euro - Atlantic
integrations have highlighted the need for the profession translator / interpreter to achieve a status of a distinguished activity; hence, the studies in translation and interpreting aim to form flexible and responsible participants at the labour market of the global society.

Translators and interpreters are the mediators in the communication between the representatives of different languages and cultures. In compliance with the European standards and the EU policy of multilingualism, the Department of Translation and Interpreting provides relevant training for bilingual translators and interpreters (English/French/German) on the basis of theoretical and specialised terminological preparation, linguistic and cultural competence, as well as practical skills, which ensure the broad base of the training necessary for the professional activity of trans-cultural communication.

The potential spheres of activity for our graduate translators / interpreters are: the translation services at the Government of R. Macedonia (the ministries, the Secretariat for European Affairs), the National Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, and the judiciary (the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Court, the Appellate Court, The Primary Courts), the diplomatic missions in the Republic of Macedonia and abroad, the multinational business companies, as well as the national and international organisations and associations, and the EU institutions (European Commission, European Parliament, European Court of Justice, etc.).

I. CHRONOLOGY

The Department of Translation and Interpreting began operation in the academic year 2001/2002, following three years of preparation as part of the joint European project (Project ID: S-JEP-12261-1997 - PHARE, prepared by Prof. Dr. Dorena Hristova), in the framework of the TEMPUS PHARE programme. Its realisation began on the 14th December 1997 and lasted until the 14th March 2001. The partner institutions involved in this project were the “Blazhe Koneski” Faculty of Philology in Skopje, the Institute Libre Marie Haps in Brussels, the Institute of Translators and Interpreters in Brussels (Erasmushogeschool van het Gemmenschapsonderwiis), Institute of Translators, Interpreters and International Relations at the University of Social Sciences in Strasbourg -Strasbourg II (Institut de Tradecteurs, d’Interprètes et de Relations Internationales – Université des Sciences Humaines de Strasbourg), and the University of Heidelberg (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg) in cooperation with the University of Mainz (Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität).
In the course of the realisation of the project a team of professors and lecturers from the Departments of English Language and Literature, Romance Languages and Literatures, German Language and Literature and the Department of Macedonian and South-Slavonic Languages, who accepted to teach at the Department of Translation and Interpreting, underwent a professional training at the above mentioned institutions.

The academic staff of the Department of Translation numbers over 40 professors, lecturers and senior lecturers, teaching assistants, and external experts-instructors, qualified in the field of Translation Studies, and in Macedonian, English, French and German language and culture. Covering a broad range of research interests, the members of the Department are also part of numerous national and international research projects in translation studies, linguistics and cultural studies.

The curriculum of the Department of Translation and Interpreting was designed in cooperation with the partner institutions that took part in the project, in compliance with the European standards, corresponding to the European Credit Transfer System.

The Department of Translation offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of study. On the undergraduate level, the Department offers a four-year course in translation/interpreting (BA), whereas on the postgraduate level, it offers a one-year Master Course in Conference Interpreting (MA), based on the EMCI (European Masters in Conference Interpreting).

Students

Currently, there are over 500 students enrolled in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by the Department. Our BA and MA degrees provide our students with a wide array of career opportunities.

Facilities

Our facilities include a computer lab and interpreter training lab, and a library with academic and periodical resources. In addition, the Centre of Terminology, which was established within the Department, is equipped with the necessary technical equipment.

Activities

Monday Conferences: In the course of the summer semester in the academic year 2003/2004, the so called Forum for Academic Exchange of Experience or “Monday Conference” was initiated for the first time at the Department of Translation and Interpreting. It is a simulation of a conference and is held regularly each Monday at 6 p.m. in the Conference Hall. This event, which in the meantime has achieved considerable reputation, features presentations in Macedonian/ English/ French/ German from renowned representatives from Macedonian and foreign institutions, as well as diplomatic corps. This type of activity, which has been greeted by both the professors and the students, creates an authentic environment for the students from the Interpretation Module to practice interpreting consecutively and simultaneously in front of an audience.

Internship

Internship for 30 hours per semester is mandatory in the fourth year.

Students are asked to produce a log on their internship covering the types of translated texts, directionality, IT skills necessary for a member of a professional translation team, supervision and similar. Тhey also have to submit the final report on their work by their supervisor. The department has contracts with the following institutions which provide work placement:
Secretariat-General of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia, Translation Service
National Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Translation Service
