This is how a portrait starts. I pencil in the eyes first. Then a nostril. Then the line separating the lips. Everything flows from there.
I tried a more impressionistic approach here. One more cognac and I would've had it.
"Girl drawing herself" (2005). Sometimes you struggle on a piece for weeks in order to end up with crap. This one, I did in a lunch hour. And it's one of my favorite things ever.
