A Few Quick'N Dirty Tricks With Apple's VideoEditApp

On request of aid (and many others): How to place a 'logo' over a video in iMovie08?

In iMHD≤6, this was impossible due to lack of 2nd video track (a no-brainer in FCE). Fortunately, iM08 has some weird method to add stills to a project: it looks like, it lays it 'over' the video!... now, idea is simple: if still contains transparencies, what will happen...?

Again: this advice works ONLY in iM08, for iMHD≤6, follow advice given  here (Watermark).

Step 1 Reference

You can not move or size your little grafic later; so I recommend using a 'screenshot' as reference for later usage in Pic Processor …

set your Playhead (1) to any position …
ctrl-click your mouse (2) and choose 'Add Still Frame to Project'
a still is added to your project (3)
ctrl-click on that, choose 'Reveal in Finder'
open that jpeg in your Paint-app (I'm using here Photoshop Elements vers4)

Step 2 Right size

create a new project in resolution of your project; PSE offers some ready-made presets

Your Interface is for sure English.. don't worry, and I'm  PAL/Standard, probably you're using 720x640 (NTSC) or something HiDef.. . The dpi don't matter in video and we need transparency …

Step 3 Happy little logo

you can do anything in your  world (quote: Bob Ross): create a logo, sticker, a border, an arrow, a speech bubble..

I blurred the reference video grab to highlight our work: that nice sticker, upper right...
Again: you have  to do HERE the final size and position!!
Save your work in a file format, which supports iM08 and transparencies… I choose .png, in PSE to be found in the presets of 'save to web' ...

Notice PNG-24 as format and the checked Transparenz (I'll teach you German ;) ) , and see in the preview that 'checkered background', which indicates in PSE transparency ..

Step 4 Adding to Project

Now, the best moment: we add a logo to an iM08 project!

Just drag'n drop your logo.png from the Finder Window 'onto' your projects 'timeline' …
TADAAHHH... the Blue Bar indicates a still, but in the final video, we see a placed logo over movin' images!
Our little SoccerTV logo is now part of the video; dragging the blue bar can make it as long as your video…

done...

… and here some suggestions, what else to do with 'stills over video':

… create a Border in your paint-app.. ok, my example isn't that good .. but imagine the video from a wedding and you compose a nice foto-frame around the kissing couple ...
… add Comic speech-bubbles to add some commentary without voice recording …
… add arrows to highlight parts, to 'announce' forthcoming actions …
… finally, create Titles never seen in iM08 .. !!!
Your own fonts, sizes, positions - Yipee-ki-yay .. (watched too much Bruce Willis movies....)
