The Sand Creek Stream Restoration Workshop, April 19th 2010

Stream  &  Riparian Investigation, Construction, & Design Workshop - Manhattan, KS

With an emphasis on Innovative Approaches to Stream Investigation, Design, and Construction.  Field trips will focus on the stabilization & environmental retrofitting  (construction should be ongoing) of an existing flood control channel (Soldier Creek, Topeka, KS); an innovative stabilization project using Bendway Weirs built on the Blue River in 1994;  & over 9 miles of river restoration &100 acres of riparian Corridor restoration on the Little Blue River.

This workshop will introduce the methodologies and procedures for initiating, planning, analyzing, and ultimately designing long-term sustainable river and stream stabilization or restoration projects.  Innovative, environmentally sensitive, and cost-effective approaches to restoration will be discussed. Comprehensive case studies will be presented. Rain gear, boots, and field clothes are recommended for the field trips. After March 20th, lectures will be posted on the FTP site:

Instructors:  Dave Derrick (Research Hydraulic Engineer) & Dr. Rich Fischer (registered Wildlife Biologist) from the Corps of Engineer’s Research & Development Center, Phil Balch Wildhorse Riverworks, Inc; Laura Adams, Engineer with Black and Veatch; and Whitney Wolf, Program Manager, Kansas City District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.


Develop a philosophy of stream stabilization and riparian corridor design that emphasizes an understanding of the stream as a complex inter-related system that encompasses both local and system-wide processes and problems. Develop goals, apply the concepts of grade control and the Channel Evolution Model (CEM), learn about innovative bank protection methods, and how to choose the appropriate method or combination of techniques to satisfy project performance goals.

Discuss the importance of project constructability, monitoring, and maintenance. Learn how to read a stream and analyze streambank erosion problems.

Perform a series of in-the-field site analyses, understanding the role of project goals in the development of conceptual flow analyses, and designing stabilization plans that relate to the project performance goals.
